What a Day on the Water Looks Like

If you’re looking to get a feel for what a trip out with Catch My Drift is like, each trip varies based on weather, time allotment, number of people, and what species we’re targeting, but this will give you an overview of how the day is spent.

Leaving the Harbour

Our meeting spot is the fish cleaning area at the Small Craft Harbour in Ucluelet. Once everyone has arrived, we start with a brief safety demonstration and go over the emergency procedures. Once we’re aboard, we head out past the harbour entrance and begin running offshore toward the fishing grounds.

Depending on the time of year and the conditions, this run can take us along the coastline or out into open water.

Finding the Fish

Each day offshore is different. Some days we focus on salmon, trolling along offshore areas where fish are moving through. Other days we split time between salmon and bottom fishing for halibut or lingcod.

Conditions, tides, and the time of year all play a role in deciding where to fish.

Time on the Grounds

Once we’re on the fishing grounds the rods go out and the real work begins. You’ll get to use some industry-leading gear and tackle, and use the Njord Gear rod holders and swivel mounts.

Some days the action starts quickly, other days it takes patience and moving between areas. The goal is always the same: spend time where the fishing makes the most sense.

Life on the Boat

The boat has an enclosed heated cabin with seating and a table area so guests can warm up or relax between bites.

Even when the fishing slows down, the experience of being offshore, watching the coastline, and seeing wildlife is part of what makes these trips memorable.

Heading Back

At the end of the day we make our way back to the harbour where the catch is cleaned and you can take to Ukee Seafood to have it processed, sealed, frozen and prepared to take home.
