FAQ

Common questions about what’s included, what to bring, payment and cancellation policies, etc.

What's Included

The cost for each trip includes:

  • accommodation for up to 4 guests – when split between the members of your party, the cost is more economical, and most of that goes to cover the fuel required.
  • top quality gear and tackle thanks to our branded partnerships – use some of the best hooks, line, reels and rods out there from Gamakatsu, Gibbs, Islander, Maxima, Njord, and more.
  • fish cleaning – done on the boat.
    • Further processing and flash freezing can be done by our friends in town at Ukee Seafood who will also hold your catch for you until you leave, should your trip include a few extra days after your charter.
  • The years of experience and knowledge from your Captain ensure you’ll not only learn a lot on your trip out, but will likely catch what you’re looking for and have a great time doing it.
  • life jackets and safety equipment
  • Some snacks and water will be available on board, but feel free to bring your own food and drink as well. We also have a coffee machine on board you’re welcome to use.
  • coolers and ice to keep your catch chilled while we head back to the marina
  • There is a nominal fee for additional people up to 7 guests total, other than on tuna trips which can accommodate 5 people total

What to Bring

We recommend bringing the following items on a trip out with us:

  • If you plan to come with us to catch fish, you’ll need a fishing license – all guests planning to fish require a tidal sport fishing license which can be purchased online prior to your trip.
    • It may be possible to purchase in town, but there is conflicting information about who is able to provide these, so having it in hand prior to your charter is recommended.
  • hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, warm layers, waterproof shoes – we have an enclosed cabin if you want to be out of the sun or escape the relatively unpredictable weather, but if you choose to take in the views and stay outdoors, we recommend these items.
  • snacks, water – we will have some items on board but, due to various food intolerances, it’s advisable to bring items you enjoy as well. The trips can be tiring, so it’s best to have some snacks on hand.
  • If you’d like to consume beer or alcohol on board, this is permitted while we’re anchored. Please avoid purchasing drinks in glass bottles. All garbage and recycle must be taken at the end of the trip and disposed of in the appropriate bins at the marina.

Policies

The following policies apply to all fishing and private charters:

  • There is a 10% non-refundable deposit required at time of booking. Once booked we will email you to confirm the trip and provide details for sending the deposit. Your trip is not fully scheduled in our calendar until the deposit has been made.
  • The remainder of the trip can be paid in full prior to departure via e-transfer to fishing@catchmydrift.ca, or via debit or cash on the morning of the charter – we will have Square reader which accepts debit cards.
  • While we hope you’ll be able to keep your booking, should things chance and you need to cancel, we request at least 3 days notice so that we have time to rebook your spot.
  • We can only fish and keep the allowable amount regulated by the DFO. Anything over that must be released. You’re not required to keep any fish if you’d prefer to catch and release.
  • If you arrive without the required fishing license, we cannot leave until one is obtained. There are some local shops that offer them, but it is easiest to purchase online once your charter has been booked. This ensures we can leave on time and you can get in the hours on the water you paid for. Otherwise we’ll have to remain at the dock until you have the license and this time will count towards your chartered timeslot.
  • For private charters and custom trips, we ask that you let us know the event and any details that will help make the trip exactly what you’re hoping for.
  • Tuna trips are weather and water-dependent, as tuna may not be in the area if conditions are not optimal. In this case, we may need to revert to one of the other charters – salmon or bottom fish – or reschedule / cancel if you’re not able to rebook another day.

Where to Stay

Ucluelet is a popular destination, especially in the summer, so we recommend booking accommodation as soon as you’ve confirmed your trip with us. This is a list of some of the places available in Ukee, but there are many other options on AirBnB, VRBO, etc.

Local Hotels / Motels

Camping / Hostels

– some of these are outside of Ucluelet and require a bit of a drive.
